Ti-6Al-4V ELI: an implant alloy engineered for demanding fixation systems

Ti-6Al-4V is a titanium alloy with nominally 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium, with titanium as the balance. “ELI” means Extra Low Interstitials: tighter limits on elements such as oxygen, nitrogen and iron than conventional Grade 5 material. ASTM F136 and ISO 5832-3 define chemical, mechanical and metallurgical requirements for wrought Ti-6Al-4V used to manufacture surgical implants.

Why Ti-6Al-4V ELI is used in orthopedic fixation

High specific strength

Its combination of strength and relatively low density helps designers create compact fixation components without evaluating strength by weight alone. Final performance still depends on geometry, manufacturing, screw-plate interaction and the complete construct.

A lower modulus than stainless steel

Ti-6Al-4V is less stiff than common implant stainless steels. That difference can be useful in construct design, but material choice does not by itself determine construct stiffness, stability or healing.

A stable passive surface

Titanium alloys naturally form a thin oxide film. Appropriate surface preparation removes contaminants and supports corrosion resistance; ASTM F86 describes recognized preparation practices for metallic surgical implants.

Imaging considerations

Implant material, geometry, orientation and scan settings all affect CT and MRI artifact. Titanium alloys commonly produce less artifact than stainless steel in comparative imaging, but no implant should be described as “MRI safe” or “MR conditional” without device-specific testing and labeling.

What Type II anodizing does

Anodizing is an electrochemical conversion treatment of the titanium surface—not paint applied on top of the implant. It controls the oxide surface and is one part of a broader manufacturing and finishing process. Surface treatment does not replace correct implant selection, contouring, handling, cleaning or sterilization.

Material is only one part of a reliable construct

Plate profile, hole geometry, screw fit, contouring limits, fatigue behavior and surgical technique are all part of fixation performance. That is why OsteoCertus publishes system-specific mechanical tests and technical guidance alongside product information.
